Women’s soccer: The Beach falls to Aztecs

The 49ers (4-4) fell on the road to San Diego State, 2-1, Sunday at the Sports Deck.

SDSU’s Hillary Harvey put the Aztecs on the scoreboard in the 38th minute while teammate Cat Walker added another goal in the 71st minute to extend the lead to 2-0.

‘Niner defender Nicole Hubbard broke the shutout in the 73rd minute with her third goal of the season.

Goalkeeper Nicoline Jorgensen posted four saves.

LBSU resumes action on the road against Loyola Marymount on Friday at 4 p.m.

The ‘Niners defeated Pepperdine, 3-1, Friday at George Allen Field as UCLA transfer Nicole Sweetman and Shannon Bullock scored the first goals of their 49er careers.

Men’s water polo: 49ers pick up second win of season

Jeff Greenwood’s four goals lifted No. 9 Long Beach State (2-2) to an 11-7 win over UC San Diego in the consolation bracket of the NorCal Tournament Sunday at Stanford.

Taylor Clute netted two goals for the 49ers, while goalkeeper Derek Wiebe-Bailey tallied seven saves.

LBSU 10, Pomona-Pitzer 6

Jeff Greenwood’s hat-trick lifted No. 9 Long Beach State to a 10-6 win over Pomona-Pitzer in the consolation bracket of the NorCal Tournament Saturday afternoon at Stanford.

Patrick van der Linde added two goals, while Taylor Clute, Matthew Kubeck, Shane Luth, Kevin Mundia and Joe Sherrin chipped in one apiece. LBSU goalkeeper Derek Wiebe-Bailey tallied nine saves.

The Sagehens were paced by three goals from Ben Hadley.

UC Irvine 9, LBSU 8

The Beach dropped its first round match at the tournament against No. 8 UC Irvine, 9-8.

Greenwood, Mundia and Alexsandr Petrovic netted two goals each in the loss. Wiebe-Bailey made 11 saves in the match.

Cole Bielskis poured in a game-high four goals to lead the Anteaters.

The Beach returns to the pool Thursday when it hosts UCI in a rematch scheduled at 7 p.m.

Cross country: Men and women record third place finishes at Aztec Invitational

The 49er men’s and women’s cross country teams each placed third at the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State Saturday morning at Balboa Park.

Sophomore Liz Ramos was the 49er women’s top finisher, placing second overall with a time of 18:32 in the 6K race. Freshman Anne Randall also nabbed a Top 10 finish, clocking in at 18:48 to secure eighth.

On the men’s side, sophomore Raul Arcos crossed the line in 26:19 to finish seventh overall in the 8K race. Junior Steven DeCastro came in 16th with a time of 26:48.

Northern Arizona and the University of San Francisco finished 1-2 respectively in both the men’s and women’s team standings.

The 49ers next compete at the Stanford Invitational Sept. 26 at the Stanford Golf Course.

The men’s 8K race begins at 10:50 a.m., while the women’s 6K race is slated for an 11:30 a.m. start time.
