Women’s volleyball: The Beach jumps three spots in Top 25

The Long Beach State women’s volleyball team moved up three places to No. 22 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association poll released Monday morning.

The 49ers (8-3, 1-0 Big West) swept Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, having won 12 of their last sets dating back to a come-from-behind five-set victory at Tulane Sept. 12.

Big West Conference rival UC Irvine (11-3, 1-1 Big West) fell three spots to No. 24 after losing to UC Santa Barbara.

UCSB (11-2, 2-0 Big West) received votes, but did not crack the Top 25. The 49ers host the Gauchos at the Walter Pyramid Friday at 7 p.m. in their first home conference match.
 

 Women’s basketball: Sims named Rhodes Scholar candidate

Senior guard Lauren Sims was selected as Long Beach State’s representative to the Rhodes Scholar committee.

Sims has maintained a 4.0 grade point average, while majoring in biology-physiology with a minor in chemistry.

She earned All-Big West recognition after averaging 9.1 points per game during her junior season. The Fullerton native led the conference in 3-point accuracy at 38.2 percent her sophomore year.

Sims’ community service activities include volunteering for St. Mary’s Medical Center, the Special Olympics of Southern California and the Long Beach Marathon. She has plans of attending medical school after her playing days are over.

The Rhodes Scholarship provides 32 scholarships to students in the United States and other former British territories.
