Baseball: Dirtbags surrender 14 hits in loss to Cal Poly
Long Beach State (20-19, 7-7 Big West Conference) dropped the second game of its series to Cal Poly, 8-4, on Saturday at Baggett Stadium.
The Mustangs pounded out 14 hits on their way to the victory, led by shortstop J.J. Thompson who went 3-for-3 with three RBIs.
Steve Tinoco and TJ Mittelstaedt collected two hits each to lead the Dirtbags’ offense. Tinoco and Kellen Hoime drove in two runs apiece for LBSU.
Beach starter Jake Thompson (5-2) took the loss after lasting seven innings, striking out five and allowing eight runs on 13 hits. His counterpart DJ Mauldin (3-2) earned the win after going 5 2/3 innings and giving up four runs on five hits.
The series finale gets underway on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Softball: 49ers drop first series to UC Santa Barbara since 2001
The Beach (21-24, 5-9 Big West) was unable to hold on to an early lead as it dropped the series opener, 5-2 on Saturday at Campus Diamond.
Down 2-0, the Gauchos answered in the bottom half of the inning as Amanda Ziegler connected for a two-run home run to tie the game. UCSB then scored three in the fifth, thanks to a two-out, three-run homer by Keilani Jennings to the team up for good.
The 49ers out hit the Gauchos (12-33, 3-11 Big West), 7-6, and were led by senior Ashley Levine who went 2-for-2 with a double. Juniors Liz Javier and Jodi Nakawatase also finished with two hits apiece, while freshman Bree Stephan had a hit and an RBI.
Senior Bridgette Pagano (3-2) gave up five runs on six hits and struck out two in the loss.
UC Santa Barbara 2, Long Beach State 1
Long Beach also lost an early lead in the second game of the doubleheader in a 2-1 decision.
UCSB scored two runs on three hits in the bottom of the third as Brooke Putich singled home Jessica Ziegler for what proved to be the game-winner.
Junior Casey Burba led the 49er offense as she went 2-for-2 and scored the lone run. Senior Ashley Weber also tallied a hit and an RBI, while freshman Bree Stephan extended her season-long hitting streak to nine games.
Sophomore Taylor Petty (9-13) took the loss as she gave up two runs on four hits, while striking out six in three innings of work. Junior Brooke Turner came on in relief, keeping the home team hitless over the final three innings.
The two teams play again on Sunday in the series finale beginning at noon.
Women’s Tennis: ‘Niners slip past Cal Poly in Big West semifinals
Long Beach State defeated Cal Poly, 4-2, in the Big West tournament semifinals on Saturday at Indian Wells to move in the Sunday’s championship match against UC Irvine.
The 49ers (19-5) sealed the match with a victory by freshman Sarah Cantlay at No. 6 singles. Cantlay edged Jocelyn Davis 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 to notch LBSU’s fourth point of the match.
The Beach also recorded a win at No. 3 singles as Deborah Armstrong defeated Steffi Wong 6-1, 6-0, and at No. 4 singles as Rachel Manasse downed Diane Filip 6-1, 6-2.
Long Beach also took two of three doubles matches to grab the first point prior to getting singles play started. Armstrong and Anais Dallara defeated Wong and Alexa Lee, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles, while Cantlay and Julie Luzar won at No. 3 doubles.
The 49ers will play for their seventh straight Big West championship against the Anteaters on Sunday at 9 a.m.
Track and Field: LBSU completes first day at Steve Scott Invitational
The 49ers picked up three individual victories in the distance events on the first day of the Asics/Steve Scott Invitational at Anteater Stadium.
Jessica Barnard finished ahead of the pack in the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase with a lifetime-best and Big West qualifying mark of 10:59.81 to move into third on the 49er all-time charts. Alisia Barajas also won the 5000 meters in 17:41.41.
In the field events, Alexandra Cervantes recorded the 10th-best mark in school history in the hammer throw with a season-long 154-08. Her mark was also a Big West qualifier.
On the men’s side, Steven DeCastro claimed the 3000-meter steeplechase title, topping his personal record by over a second as he clocked in at 9:16.37.
Bret Hasvold also had a lifetime best in the 5000m, crossing the finish line in 14:51.69 for runner-up honors.
Kenneth Medwood led a quartet of 49ers in the long jump as he took fourth with a leap of 23-02.75. In the throws, Ryan Rosales claimed fifth in the javelin at 162-00.
The Beach returns to Anteater Stadium on Sunday to close out the meet. Both the field and track events are set to begin at noon.
