Baseball: Bullpen blows two extra-inning leads in series finale

Box score

Long Beach State dropped its series finale to Cal Poly, 16-15, in 11 innings as the Dirtbags’ relievers could not hold on to leads in the 10th and 11th innings on Sunday at Baggett Stadium.

The Mustangs (12-27, 5-10 Big West Conference) ended the game in the bottom of the 11th inning with the game tied, 15-15, when Luke Yoder’s two-out grounder slipped through the legs of LBSU shortstop Devin Lohman and into left field, allowing J.J. Thompson to score the game-winning run all the way from first base.

Beach reliever Kenny Arnerich (0-1), who was the sixth LBSU pitcher used in the game, was handed a 15-13 lead, but allowed one run on a groundball out and another on a wild pitch to set up final sequence.

Joey Terdoslavich led The Beach with four hits and two RBIs, while TJ Mittelstaedt went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs. Both teams collected 19 hits apiece as six Dirtbags players had multi-hit games.

Long Beach (20-20, 7-8 Big West) returns to action on Wednesday at Pepperdine in a nonconference game scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. The team next plays at Blair Field on Friday at 6:30 p.m. when it opens a three-game series against Stanford.

Softball: Turner fans 11 batters, 49ers swept by last-place Gauchos

Box score

The 49er softball team (21-25, 5-10 Big West) could not find any run support for starting pitcher Brooke Turner as it fell, 1-0, in a 10-inning affair with UC Santa Barbara on Sunday at Campus Diamond.

The Gauchos (13-33, 4-11 Big West) scored the game winner in the bottom of the 10th on a Jessica Beristianos sacrifice fly that allowed Jamie Adishian to score from third.

Turner (9-10) went 9 2/3 innings, struck out 11, walked two and gave up six hits in the losing cause. UCSB’s Krista Cobb (6-11) countered with 10 innings pitched, two strikeouts, one walk and six hits.

Senior left fielder Ashley Weber garnered two hits for LBSU, which has now lost eight of its last 10 games.

The 49ers will travel to Cal State Fullerton to open up a three-game series, starting with a Saturday doubleheader that kicks off at noon. Both Saturday games will be televised on ESPNU.
