Sam Jeter and Katrina Graves-Johnson both picked up individual victories in San Diego to highlight the Long Beach State track and field team’s afternoon at the 33rd annual Aztec Invitational at SDSU Sports Deck on Saturday.

Jeter won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.00 seconds, which was the sixth-fastest mark in all of Division I this season. Chris Lawson also took third at 52.71.

Lawson was also the 49ers’ top finisher in the 110m hurdles as he clocked in at 14.62 seconds to come in fifth. Nimrod Piggee (14.68) and Koree Hines (15.22) weren’t far behind with sixth and seventh-place performances, respectively.

Richard Crawford had a pair of top 10 showings in the 100m (11.07) and 200m (22.02) with season bests in both events.

Chris Walden led the distance runners in the 3000m with a mark of 8:32.85, which was good enough for sixth place. Josh Ruff also placed 10th at 8:40.63.

The quartet of Crawford, Lawson, Cameron Gillett and Jeter took third in the 4×400 relay, clocking in with a time of 3:19.37.

In the field events, Gillett had a runner-up performance in the long jump with a season-best 23-04.75.

On the women’s side, Katrina Graves-Johnson claimed the high jump title, clearing 5-07.25. Stephanie Armstrong also tied for second (5-07).

Tara Ross was the runner-up in the javelin with a toss of 160-00, which ranks her fourth on the 49er all-time charts and which also puts her fourth among all Division I athletes this season. Randi Hicks placed third overall at 158-10, the fifth-longest mark in Division I so far this year.

In the long jump, Nkechi Okonkwo tied for fifth with the 10th-best mark in school history (19-01.25).

Shakina Phillips led the LBSU hurdlers with a seventh-place showing in the 400 hurdles. She crossed the finish line in 62.54 seconds.

Long Beach State returns to action next weekend when it sends a split squad to the Stanford Invitational (March 25-26) and the Cal-Nevada Championships (March 26-27).
