Senior paces LBSU track team at Drake Relays

Senior Randi Hicks led the Long Beach State women’s track and field team Friday at the 102nd annual Drake Relays as she won the women’s javelin meet with a season-best 165-11.

Hicks became the third overall and first women’s Drake Relays champion for LBSU.

She joins the men’s sprint medley relay team that finished ahead of the pack in 2008 and Doug Lefler, who claimed the men’s javelin title in 2004 as the only 49ers to win their respective events at the meet.

Tara Ross added a fourth-place finish in the javelin with a distance of 154-10. Nimrod Piggee also competed in the men’s 110-meter hurdles on Friday, clocking in at 14.96 to place 16th overall.

Colin Dunbar is set to compete in the hammer throw, while Christopher Lawson will be a contestant in the 400-meter hurdles at the Drake Relays tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the rest of the 49ers will kick off the Steve Scott Invitational on Saturday. The two-day meet begins with the women’s hammer throw and men’s javelin at 2 p.m.
